The story is based on the Bengal famine of 1943, where millions starved to death as a result of British policies. The film deals with social and political issues in contemporary India and in doing so it explores how memories of disaster can serve as a rallying point for social change. The narrative voice in this film is that of the child, setting up what we might expect to be surrogate memories; however these autobiographical reflections are shown through the rheostatic lens of cinema during war times when borders between safety and danger were blurred. Awara is not just a war film or even a portrayal of this period in history, but an exploration of the ways in which history is constructed, told and remembered. The film shows how the narrator’s life was transformed by British colonial rule. For example, the family he knows at the start of the film lives in modest dwellings with ample food supplies. However, after British rule begins to take hold his father leaves for work in Europe leaving behind his wife and son to fend for themselves. The narrator takes refuge with an old man who has escaped from prison during one of the famine sweeps. He is then introduced to British rule which brings an end to his freedom and his hopes of freedom. The young boy is stripped of his home, country and family. He must leave his community to survive. The narrator also recalls places that he has never known before; he travels from village to village as a refugee. In the end, he survives the famine and returns with his father to reclaim what was his before Britain's occupation of India began in 1857. The film does not end with a victory however but rather with a look at British colonial memory as part of contemporary India’s political discourse on the Bengal famine.
